Roundup: Artland Breathing Fire Ahead Of EuroChallenge

18.11.2009

There is not a hotter team right now in Germany than Artland Dragons, a club that could be among the favorites to win the EuroChallenge.

Thorsten Leibenath's men hit the summit in the Beko Basketball Bundesliga after holding on for a 77-76 win over Deutsche Bank SKYLINERS in their latest clash.

One of the players to watch out for in Europe will be Toby Bailey, who turns 34 on Thursday.

A standout at UCLA during his college days, Bailey has spent virtually his entire professional career in Europe.

He made five of seven shots from behind the arc on his way to 19 points to lead Artland to their seventh win in Germany's top flight.

The Skyliners made things interesting.

They trailed 44-33 at half-time but clawed their way back and almost pulled off an unlikely victory but Bailey and Artland held on.

"We have seen a game at a high level in which Frankfurt has also contributed," Leibenath said.

"We knew that Frankfurt is a team that comes back after huge deficits and we were prepared."

Antwerp Flying High

The Antwerp Giants are among Belgium's representatives in the EuroChallenge and so far, they've been among the leading sides on their domestic scene.

Third in the standings with four wins and three defeats, they seized the upper hand in their Belgium Cup Quarter-Final with Dexia Mons-Hainaut by winning the first leg at home on Tuesday night, 69-64.

Tim Black poured in 22 points for the Giants, who will travel to Dexia for the second leg on January 19.

The Giants take on Artland Dragons on November 24 in the EuroChallenge.

Another Setback For Elan Chalon

Just when French strugglers Elan Chalon thought it couldn't get any worse, it did.

The EuroChallenge outfit, which takes on Dexia Mons-Hainaut on November 24, has lost guard Nicolas Lang to a shoulder injury for at least 10 days.

The club has announced that the 19-year-old suffered a bruised right shoulder in their 76-70 setback at Le Havre - the team's seventh defeat in its first seven games to start the French season.

Chalon host Rouen on Saturday before getting ready for their first EuroChallenge game against Dexia with Lang not expected to take part in either.
