An Italy debutant in 2012, Polonara had his first competitive appearance in 2014 in a EuroBasket qualifier against Russia. He had previously featured at U18 level and at U20 where he helped claimed European silver in Bilbao in 2011. A youth player with Teramo, he made his Serie A debut in 2009 but switched to Varese in 2012 where he was part of the Varese team that topped the regular season standings and was runner-up in the Italian Cup final. He was named Serie A's best Under-22 player in 2012 and 2013. Moving to Reggio Emilia in 2014, he had a first appearance in the Eurocup, earning MVP honours in Week 7, and was second in the voting for the Italian league's Most Improved Player. Often wears No. 33 as a tribute to Larry Bird and Scottie Pippen. He has earned a diploma in accountancy and is a frequent Playstation gamer.
