Sporta Klubs Cesis are throwing down the gauntlet to Latvia rivals TTT Riga and all of their EuroCup Women opponents with a host of impressive signings.
After swooping for veteran Ieva Tare and her fellow Latvia internationals Elina Babkina and Santa Dreimane, the team on Wednesday signed France international center Sandra Dijon on a three-month deal.
Dijon is coming off an impressive season at Montpellier. In the eight EuroCup Women games last year, she averaged 13.5 points and 6.5 rebounds.
She played 13.4 minutes per contest this summer for France in their successful EuroBasket Women qualifying campaign, pouring in 5.8 points and grabbing 4.1 rebounds.
The club is hoping to get the best out of Dreimane, who played at the last two EuroBaskets for the Latvians but is coming off a serious injury that kept her out of action for the past eight months.
The 34-year-old Tare, meanwhile, fought through the pain barrier after dislocating her elbow at the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament for Women to represent Latvia at the Olympics.
Cesis enjoyed an impressive 2007-08 campaign when they finished second to Riga in Latvia's top flight. They were also runners-up in the Baltic League to Teo Vilnius.
Their first game in the EuroCup Women is a qualifying round clash on October 2 at home to ZKK Medvescak.
Cesis is a town of 18,000 inhabitants.
