EWE Baskets Made To Sweat But Overcome Olympia

25 November 2008

EWE Baskets were made to sweat but they won 76-73 over Olympia Larissa of Greece in their EuroChallenge Regular Season Group E clash on Tuesday in Oldenburg.

The German team had a great start with Ruben Boumtje Boumtje and Je'Kel Foster each scoring 10 points in the first quarter as they opened up a 26-14 lead.

Three times the hosts went in front by 12 in the second quarter but Olympia refused to let them pull away and trailed 41-31 at half-time.

Early in the third quarter, a blowout looked as if it might be on the cards when a Foster three-point play stretched the EWE Baskets advantage to 46-31.

Olympia stayed within striking distance, however, and clawed their way back.

Two Michael King free throws for the visitors left them trailing only 58-54 with a quarter to play.

A King jumper pulled Olympia even closer at 65-63 with 6:12 to go in the contest but Boumtje Boumtje made a lay-up and Foster a three-ball, taking his tally to a team-high 18, as Oldenburg went back into a 70-63 lead.

Terrel Ray Castle's two free throws with 11 seconds remaining left EWE Baskets clinging to a 76-73 advantage.

Neither side scored again.

Castle had a game-high 20 points and eight rebounds in defeat.
