Cedevita Zagreb mounted a furious rally in the last seven minutes at Elan Chalon on Tuesday evening to keep alive their hopes of a place in the Eurocup.
In the first leg of the Qualifying Round tie in France and trailing by 22 points, the Croatian outfit almost dug themselves a hole they wouldn't be able to climb out of.
But Cedevita, who reached the Semi-Finals of the Eurocup last season, finished the game with a 25-8 run and ended up falling, 78-73.
They will have every chance of overturning the five-point deficit when the second leg is played in Zagreb next week.
Chalon will be kicking themselves because they allowed a huge lead to all but disappear.
Forcing Cedevita to turn the ball over on 16 occasions in the contest, the French team capitalized by scoring 19 points off the miscues.
Cedevita trailed 70-48 with 6:52 to play but never gave up.
Instead, led by Haywood Owens, they stormed back.
Owens, a power forward, took over by scoring 10 of the visiting side's points in a 12-2 run that cut the deficit to 72-60.
His two free-throws with 42 seconds to play reduced the arrears to 78-73, the final score.
Owens ended up scoring 14 of his team-high 17 points over the vital stretch in the final period.
Abdul Aminu of Chalon led all scorers with 20 points.
