Officials of FIBA Europe, the city of Novi Sad and representatives of all 16 teams competing at the UMCOR U18 Championship Women came together Friday at the city's town hall to pay tribute to the efforts of all those involved in the event.
“We are very pleased to once again welcome FIBA Europe to Novi Sad,” Said Mayor Maja Gojkovic.
“I would like you to remember Novi Sad as the city of basketball not only now but in the future.”
Novi Sad is quickly becoming a center for basketball in the region having hosted not only this most recent youth competition but also games at EuroBasket 2005 and the U19 World Championship later this summer.
“Since I was last here two years ago I have seen tremendous changes and an amazing amount of growth,” commented FIBA Europe General Secretary Nar Zanolin.
“On behalf of FIBA Europe we are very pleased to be back in this beautiful city.”
As the city has grown so has youth basketball in Europe exploding from 186 teams when the competitions began to 215 teams this summer.
“The youth is the future of the sport and that extends beyond just players,” said Zanolin.
“These tournaments serve as a training ground for young coaches and referees as well.”
