Antonic, Serbia Feel ‘Obligation’ To Win In Italy

09 July 2008

Serbia came ever so close to capturing the gold medal at last year's U20 European Championship in Sofia, Bulgaria, but lost to Spain in the final.

Now they'll be looking to reach the top of the podium in the under-20 event this year in Italy where they'll face Germany, France and the tournament hosts in the group stage.

"It's never easy to repeat success, but we come from Serbia, the land with a rich basketball tradition, and we have an obligation to represent our country well," said coach Jovica Antonic, who also serves as boss of the senior women's team.

Last year's 75-60 setback to the Spaniards was a huge disappointment, but not something that should weigh heavily on the minds of this year's team.

"We are focused on the forthcoming competition," Antonic said.

"That's the only thing on our mind. Starting from our opening game against Germany, we'll take each game as our next one-and-only goal. That's a recipe for success."

Serbia squad for FIBA U20 European Championship for Women: Ivana Musovic, Sonja Petrovic, Dragana Gobeljic, Smiljana Ivanovic, Iva Roglic, Jelena Milovanovic, Maja Miljkovic, Nina Bogicevic, Jelena Cerina, Ana Dabovic, Tina Ajdukovic, Irena Matovic.
