Turkey Stun Serbia
Tayfun Erülkü scored 21 points to pace four players in double figures as Turkey knocked off Serbia 82-75 in Group B of the U18 European Championship Men.
Turkey, who finished second to Serbia in the group, also received 17 points from Samet Geyik while Kenan Sipahi scored 13 points and Ugur Dokuyan hit for 12 points.
Serbia, who like Turkey finished 2-1 in a three-way tie with Germany, were paced by Vasilje Micic with 19 points, four rebounds and five assists while Dorde Milosevic scored 16 points. Nikola Jankovic scored 13 points and had 15 rebounds and Luka Mitrovic also collected a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Serbia took a 10-4 lead early on in the first quarter which saw five lead changes and six ties and Turkey ahead 25-22 at its end.
Turkey finished an 11-0 run spanning the first and second quarters for a 31-22 lead and the advantage grew to 11 points, 36-25. But Serbia had cut the margin to 42-38 at the break.
The biggest lead of the third quarter was three points by Serbia 47-44 after a 9-2 run to open the frame. And Serbia were ahead 62-60 after three periods.
The game remained tight in the fourth quarter with Sipahi hitting a three-pointer with 52 seconds for a 76-71 lead. Then Dokuyan and Erülkü each made two free throws in the final 21 seconds to ice the victory.
