Donetsk, Bilbao Look To Return To Winning Ways

02 November 2009

Both BC Donetsk and Basket Bilbao will go into their crunch Eurocup Qualifying Round second-leg clash in Spain this week on the back of defeats.

Ukrainians Donetsk, which prevailed 71-63 in the first leg, crashed to a heavy defeat in their own arena against UNICS Kazan in the VTB League on Friday while Bilbao were beaten soundly at home by Real Madrid in the ACB.

After Donetsk's 98-78 thrashing, it was put to their coach Ramunas Butautas that there was a lack of leadership on the court during the game's difficult moments.

"I agree with you," said Butautas,  who went so far as to apologize to the fans for his team's dismal display while also accepting blame.

"Today, everyone played disgusting.

"When you lose with a difference of 20 points - this is a great psychological shock.

"Nobody likes losing. I hope this will be like a cold shower for our basketball team."

Indeed, the defeat for Donetsk should mean that Butautas will have his players' full attention in practice ahead of Tuesday's game at Bilbao.

"I hope this loss will be a benefit before the game in Spain," Butautas said.

Saturday's drubbing for Bilbao, meanwhile, was even worse as they fell 96-70 to Real Madrid to drop to 1-4 in the Spanish ACB.
