Round-Up: Donetsk On Right Track, Bilbao Fall

16.10.2009

Everything is going according to plan for BC Donetsk as they get ready for next week's EuroCup Qualifying Round tie with Bilbao Basket.

Donetsk, who are coached by Ramunas Butautas, beat Sergio Scariolo's BC Khimki on Thursday in the new, eight-team Unified VTB League, 70-69.

The Ukrainian outfit prevailed after outscoring their opponents 19-7 in the last quarter.

Butautas liked the job his defense did in the game.

"We have coped with their perimeter players," he said.

"I saw our shortcomings and tomorrow will begin to fix them and mend the holes."

Butautas knows the season will be long and hard

"We can rejoice in the victory only until such time as we come out of the showers and then, it's back to every day training," he said.

"Celebrations can only be at the end of the season.

"It was nice to win the game to start a big tournament, which involves strong clubs, and I am glad that we were invited to the Unified VTB League. Here, all fights will be tough and interesting, and that will contribute to the skills of the local players."

Butautas also got one over on Scariolo, who in addition to leading Khimki is the coach of Spain.

Butautas resigned as Lithuania boss after they crashed out of last month's EuroBasket with just a single win, with one of their defeats coming against Spain.

In Group B, CSKA Moscow caught fire from long range and brought Zalgiris Kaunas' good start to the season to a screeching halt.

Russia international Andrey Vorontsevich drilled all three of his shots from behind the arc on his way to a team-high 16 points and Croatia playmaker Zoran Planinic was also a perfect three of three from long range and finished with 15 points in a 90-74 triumph for CSKA.

The Group B game was tight until the fourth quarter when CSKA turned on the afterburners and outscored the Lithuanian giants 25-15.

Zalgiris captain Dainius Salenga had a game-high 18 points in defeat.

Azovmash travelled to Estonia and whipped Kalev in the other Group B game and took command in the opening quarter when they scored 21 points while holding the home side to just four.

Simonas Serapina finished with 21 points and Rolandas Jarutis 19 for Azovmash.

Bilbao Fall In Basque Derby

Spain international Alex Mumbru poured in 24 points Croatia's Marko Banic had 19 but Basketball Bilbao suffered an 85-76 defeat in the ACB at Caja Laboral on Thursday.

The setback has left Bilbao 1-1 on the campaign.

AEL Limassol Win Super Cup

Proteas EKA AEL, who will again play in the EuroChallenge this season, got their year off in style with a 70-65 triumph in the Super Cup over APOEL.

New signing Ilian Evtimov led the winners with 14 points.

AEL will take on Cedevita in their first EuroChallenge game on November 24.

APOEL, meanwhile, are in the Eurocup Qualifying Round and will take on Tercas Teramo next week.
