Career: Skonto Riga (Latvia-LBL, 2003-04), Unicaja Malaga (Spain-Liga ACB, 2004-05), BK Riga (Latvia-LBL, 2005-06), Barons/LMT Riga (Latvia-Baltic & LBL, 2006-07).
Berzins is a player with a lot of potential that has struggled to reach the high expectations placed on him. The 2.11 m big man was a key player for Latvia’s youth teams, looking at times like a better prospect than Andris Biedrins. As tall as Biedrins, Berzins is even more mobile and is blessed with a good shot from middle and long range. Unfortunately, after producing some big games, Berzins seems to have cooled off and needs time to rest. In 2004, he had a hopeful season with Skonto Riga and was signed by Malaga. With the famous Spanish club, Berzins practiced for several months without playing, eventually returning to ASK Riga. Last summer, he changed clubs again, signing with Barons/LMT Riga where he averaged 10.0 points and 4.6 rebounds per game in the Baltic league. Nothing to be ashamed of, but far from the NBA future everyone predicted of him. However, Latvia still hopes this great talent will blossom sooner rather then later.
