A-Mayes-ing Swans Earn Draw With Red Star

Allianz Swans Gmunden trailed by as many as 11 points in the second half and seven in the fourth quarter but fought back to finish in an 82-82 tie at home to Red Star Belgrade on Tuesday.

In the first leg of the EuroCup Qualifying Round 2 showdown, it was the two stars of Swans' narrow two-legged victory over Tartu Rock in the first qualifying round who shone again.

Deteri Mayes and Anthony Fisher each had 21 points for the Austrian outfit, who also got a boost from Florian Schöninger and his three-point shooting.

Schöninger was four of seven from behind the arc and finished with 12 points.

Red Star were led by their 2.03m forward, Tadija Dragicevic, who scored 17.

The visitors, coached by Yugoslavia's 2002 FIBA World Championship winning coach Svetislav Pesic, threatened to blow the game wide open in the first half by three times going in front by 13 points before settling for a 42-30 lead at half-time.

They weren't able to press home the advantage in the second half.

Pesic's team were still in a strong position at 70-63 with 6:24 to play in the contest, but Schöninger drilled one of his three-balls to spark an 8-0 run that was capped by an old fashioned three-point play from Mayes that put the hosts in front at 71-70.

Red Star went back in front,  but a Mayes three-pointer with 21 seconds left ended up being the last basket of the game.

There will be all to play for in the second leg when it's staged on November 11 back in Belgrade.
