Sports can be cruel, though.
Torrens, in the middle of a fine season with Gala, suffered a serious knee injury in a game at Lotos Gdynia in January and had to stop playing.
That hasn't kept her out of the Final Eight spotlight because on Wednesday, the Mallorca native was given her 2011 FIBA Europe Women's Player of the Year award (voting results here) before Galatasaray's game against Rivas Ecopolis.
FIBA Europe Secretary General Nar Zanolin walked onto the Abdi Ipekci court with Torrens and presented her the honor, one that was richly deserved.
"Alba is not only an outstanding player, but even more a true role model." commented Mr. Zanolin
"She is amazingly positive and, despite sitting on the bench, still a valuable member of her team."
Torrens, 22, led Perfumerias Avenida to glory at last year's Final Four in Ekaterinburg and was named the event's Most Valuable Player.
She averaged 15.8 points per game in the 2010-11 EuroLeague Women campaign and then played at the EuroBasket Women in Poland, leading in Spain in scoring at 13.8 points per contest.
Torrens received a warm reception by the fans at the Final Eight when being handed the award.
