Halcon Avenida Brace for CSKA Showdown

14 November 2006

Halcon Avenida may be at home but they'll have to spring a big upset to beat Russian powerhouse CSKA Volgaburmash on Wednesday.

CSKA were runners-up to Gambrinus Sika Brno in the EuroLeague Women last season and the year before, they captured the title.

They have won their first two games in the competition this season.

"When you look at players they have, you do fear them," said Avenida guard Silvia Dominguez.

"But you don't win games just by names.

"We know it's going to be a very challenging encounter against a very physical side."

Avenida, the defending champions of Spain, bounced back from their defeat to Bourges by winning at ZVVZ USK Prague last week.

"Samara are candidates to win the EuroLeague but we will try to show the good basketball we have displayed last week and hopefully, with the support of our crowd, we will have some options," Dominguez said.

The Spanish side has suffered a blow forward Laura Camps unavailable through injury.

Camps aggravated a knee injury in Monday's training session and will be unavailable for the encounter in Salamanca.
