Besiktas Cola Comeback Condemns Nadezhda To Fifth Defeat

12 November 2008

Besiktas Cola Turka trailed by 13 points early in the second quarter but stormed back and beat Nadezhda 89-81.

The Turkish team claimed a hugely important victory, their second in five games, as they try to reach the next phase of the EuroLeague Women from Group A while Nadezhda suffered a fifth successive defeat.

The visitors from Russia put themselves in a strong position when going in front at 33-20 with 8:51 left in the second quarter after a lay-up by Latvia international Zane Tamane.

They weren't able to press home the advantage, however,  and Besiktas went on a 14-1 run to tie the game at 34-34.

The contest was knotted at 50-50 at half-time.

The Istanbul side lowered the boom over the next 10 minutes, outscoring Nadezhda 23-11 for a 73-61 lead.

The advantage ballooned to 84-64 midway through the fourth quarter.

Nadezhda did not give up, and that bodes well for the rest of their season.

They closed the gap to 87-81 with 1:01 remaining but ran out of steam over the final minute.

Belarus Olympian Anastasiya Veremeenko could hardly do anything more for Nadezhda, at least from a statistical standpoint.

She had an eye-popping 28 points and 20 rebounds and also swatted three shots.

Serbia national team guard Milica Dabovic scored 21 points, handed out four assists and pulled down five rebounds for Besiktas.

Four other Besiktas players hit double figures in points.
