Athinaikos Unimpressive Ahead Of Trip To Craiova
Sony Athinaikos have eight wins in as many games in Greece but coach Ioannis Ktistakis was less than impressed by the team's performances in its weekend victory over Aris.
Athinaikos, who didn't lose a game last season in the competition, scraped a 66-61 win.
They hit just 13 of 45 (28%) inside the arc and watched as Aris hit back from a 35-27 deficit at half-time to lead 44-42 going into the last frame.
"We are happy with the result, but not the look and it is imperative to rally immediately because three important games that we cannot afford to take lightly to follow," Ktistakis said.
"If we exclude the first quarter, the remainder of the game we had a very poor performance and our game was marked by great nervousness."
Were it not for the presence of veteran point guard Dimitra Kalentzou, Athinaikos would have lost.
She hit only two of eight shots from two-point range but from the three-point line, Kalentzou buried five of nine and she also drilled all six of her free-throws for a game-high 25 points.
Aris, who like Athinaikos are playing in the EuroCup Women, got 18 points from Camille Lenoir and 17 from Chantelle Handy.
Athinaikos are in action at SCM-CSS Craiova on Wednesday night in the EuroCup while Aris face Dynamo - GUVD in Russia.
David Return Boosts Reyer
Ilisaine Karen David's return to Umana Reyer couldn't have come at a better time for the Venezia outfit.
The Brazilian veteran competed for the club from 2004-07 and had been on the books of Cras Basket Taranto but a lack of minutes with the EuroLeague Women outfit and the need for a quality player at Reyer led to her rejoining her former side.
David's return has coincided with a knee injury that has sidelined Australia international Jennifer Screen.
The newcomer played 22 minutes against Lucca over the weekend, scoring seven points, hauling in two rebounds and coming up with two steals in a 53-52 victory.
Reyer are traveling to Slovakia for the first leg of the EuroCup Women Sixteenth-Finals tie against Ruzomberok on Thursday.
David turns 33 on Friday.
