At 25, Volodymyr Koval gets his first chance to play with the national team. The player has no experience at the senior level and has never played in a major international tournament in any age category. But his good showing in the FIBA Europe Cup convinced Hennadiy Zaschuk to pre-select him for EuroBasket... Dnepropetrovsk, his hometown and club team for most of his career, suffered in the Superleague with a 11-25 record. In European competition, Dnepropetrovsk could not get out of group play (1-5) but Koval posted strong numbers : 11.4 pts, 4.6 rbds, 4.8 assts, using his strong frame and efficient mid-range jumper. His three-point shooting, however, remains suspect (3-34)... In 2001-02, Koval spent a season in Russian helping Ekaterinburg to the first division.
