Ukraine: Azovmash Swoop For Khizhniak

21 February 2006

Azovmash Mariupol have signed Dynamo St Petersburg center Grygorii Khizhniak.

The Russian side have decided to release the 31-year-old Ukrainian after being unable to guarantee him the amount of playing time he is seeking.

The news comes just 24 hours before Dynamo continue their defence of the EuroCup with the first of their best-of-three quarter-final with Maroussi Honda.

Khizhniak had found his appearances in the competition limited, averaging just 10 minutes and 3.8 points per game.

Dynamo chief executive Vladimir Rodionov told the club's official website: "This move is in Khizhniak's interest.

"It's not right to give this good player not much playing time. We're thankful for all Grygorii has done for the club and wish him success."

Khizhniak, who will be returning to his homeland, added: "Unfortunately, I have to leave St Petersburg.

"Azovmash are interested in me and it's important that I'll have more playing time.

"Anyway, I think that I've acquired good and useful experience during my time at Dynamo. This side are able to achieve big things and I wish my former team a successful end to this season."
