Star center Sylvia Fowles showed why she will be a pivotal figure for Galatasaray Medical Park this season after claiming an impressive debut double-double to help sink French champions Tarbes GB 84-68 in Istanbul.
Having made the switch from reigning EuroLeague Women title holders Sparta&K Moscow Region during the summer to spearhead the ambitions of her new club, it looks like the Turkish side have made the right investment after she opened with 16 points, 11 rebounds and 3 blocked shots.
Also excelling and enjoying opening night in Group C was Seimone Augustus who was back in town to re-live former glories having helped Galatasaray to EuroCup Women success two seasons ago.
Augustus poured in 20 points on her return as the home team blew away the stone-cold visitors right from the outset in a blistering opening which left Tarbes shell-shocked and with a mountain to climb.
They raced into a commanding 21-2 lead and within six minutes it looked to be effectively all over but Tarbes weren't going to lie down and die early.
The visitors showed great character and came storming back as they took the second quarter 21-13 to get to within four points at the break at 38-34.
While they briefly made it a one shot game during the third quarter, Galatasaray accelerated once more and Tarbes ran out of gas as the hosts eventually coasted to victory.
Tugba Palazoglu meanwhile played a nice cameo with three of four from downtown as she finished with 11 points to go with an impressive 6 assists.
Ana Cata-Chitiga was arguably the best performer for the losing team as she harvested 12 points off an efficient six of eight floor shooting.
