Career: Buducnost Podgorica (Montenegro-Superleague, 2001-04), Wisla Can-Pack (Poland-PLKK, 2004-09), Frisco Sika Brno (Czech Republic-ZBL, 2009-11)
One player who has never stopped talking about her pride at reaching a EuroBasket Women tournament with the country of her birth is Jelena Skerovic. After all, like Milka Bjelica, she has worn the National Team vest at senior level for both Yugoslavia and also Serbia & Montenegro. Of course this third uniform is the most special to her, and as one of the most experienced players in the Montenegro camp, she appreciates more than anyone the depth of history and meaning of this tournament for those involved. In terms of her individual contribution, it is of paramount importance. How Skerovic plays will probably dictate much of how her team fares in this tournament. She is a playmaker who has as much experience in elite level basketball as anyone else around while her influence on the younger players will be very important, something she has gotten used to after being the veteran on a young Frisco Sika Brno team in EuroLeague Women last season. She provides a steady hand in a backcourt which doesn't quite match the formidable frontcourt and so the onus is on her to play well. However, should Anna De Forge play alongside her, then the weight may be lifted a little. Expect her to bring her usual sublime passing to Poland and finish with a phenomenal amount of assists. Crucially, she will make sure the forwards and centers get the ball in the right place and at the right time so they can go to work and do the bulk of damage. |
