UMMC Ekaterinburg served up a timely reminder that they will be the team to beat in the EuroLeague Women Final Four by edging Sparta&K M.R. Vidnoje in Russia's top flight on Sunday. Candace Parker led UMMC with 22 points and seven rebounds in a 73-69 victory over Sparta&K, their opponents at the Final Four on April 8. Gundars Vetra's team threatened to blow Sparta&K out when they stretched a 23-22 lead at the end of the first quarter to 42-28 at half-time. Sparta&K, the four-time defending champions of the EuroLeague Women, stormed back in the third quarter when they outscored UMMC 27-19 but the hosts held on. France internationals Sandrine Gruda (11pts) and Celine Dumerc (9pts) shone for UMMC, with Russia's Maria Stepanova also weighing in with 10 points and seven boards. Epiphanny Prince had 14 points for Sparta&K. UMMC had already locked up first place in the Russian domestic league and Sparta&K had wrapped up second. Gundars Vetra's side will go into the Russian post-season at 18-0 while Sparta&K, led by Pokey Chatman, are 15-3. |
