Gambrinus Reflect On Quarter-final Setback At Spartak

01 March 2007

Almost a year on from their greatest triumph, Gambrinus Sika Brno's title defense is over in the EuroLeague Women.

The Czech giants crashed to a 72-59 defeat at Spartak Moscow Region, putting the new powerhouses in the women's game into the Final Four.

Eva Vitecková (Gambrinus Sika Brno)
Gambrinus' Eva Vitecková scored 33 points in game one, but just 13 in the next two games combined.
Jan Bobrovsky's team captured the European title in front of their adoring fans in Brno last year by hammering Volgaburmash but with Delisha Milton having departed for Ros Casares and injuries and illness plaguing the team during the play-offs, Gambrinus were unable to match the Russians.

"It is very hard to play such a quality team like Spartak Moscow with six players," Bobrovsky said to www.basket.idnes.cz.

"The home team decided who would win in the first half despite the nice fight my girls showed.

"Zuzana Zirkova played well in the first half and other players - (Hana) Machova and Ivana Vecerová had a good second half. (But) I am little disappointed from performance of (Deanna) Nolan, who did not have a good day today.

"We certainly haven't shamed ourselves in this series."

Nolan scored just four points on two of eight shooting.

Another glaring aspect to Gambrinus' two defeats was the minimal impact of Eva Viteckova, who buried seven three-pointers on her way to 33 points in the 73-58 Game One victory.

She was not as influential in the next two games, scoring just three points in Game Two and 10 on Wednesday.

"They have more quality players so they could make more substitutions," Viteckova said.

"We had couple of good moments on defense and offense as well but we didn't have enough power to play an open game and to hold off their pressure."

Hana Machova admitted: "The Russian team was better in every aspect."
