Umana Reyer Venezia opened their EuroLeague Women account with a resounding 77-68 victory at Gambrinus Sika Brno.
The victory will leave Umana Reyer in a very upbeat mood as it comes not long after the team's Supercoppa Italiana victory over Famila Schio.
The result will send shockwaves across the beautiful Czech Republic city of Brno because the basketball fans there are accustomed to watching a powerhouse Gambrinus team.
In 2006, Gambrinus won the competition and just last season they reached the final.
But they are missing two key players with Jana Vesela and Ivana Vecerova having decided to leave for Ros Casares for 2008-09.
The Italian club trailed 40-38 a minute into the second half but outscored their hosts 19-6 over the next nine minutes for a 57-46 lead.
Gambrinus, beaten finalists in last season's competition, closed the gap to 69-66 with 1:55 remaining but got no closer.
Daliborka Jokic replied with a jump shot and Giorgia Sottana followed with four consecutive free throws as Umana Reyer took command for good.
Jenifer Nadalin led the way for the winners with 14 points while four other Venezia players finished in double figures in scoring.
For Gambrinus, Zuzana Zirkova and Eva Viteckova each had 13 points while new signing Liene Jansone, the Latvia international, scored 11 with five rebounds.
