Romania Mourns Alexe Death

The Romanian basketball community is in shock following the death of men's national team captain Antonio Alexe.

Alexe, who also captained Romanian side CSU Asesoft Ploiesti, was involved in a fatal car accident on 20th January following his team’s FIBA Europe Cup victory over Spartak Euroins.

Alexe was recognised as Romania’s most outstanding basketball player of the last 10 years. He played in Romania for Constanta, Oradea, Arad, Ploiesti and in Hungary for Szolnoki, Sopron and Falco. He was a 3-time league MVP in Hungary and selected as Romanian League MVP on 4 occasions.

In addition, he won the Romanian League 4 times and Cup 3 times.

Alexe’s contribution to the Romanian national team was no less impressive. He represented his country in more than 250 games, most recently in qualification games for Eurobasket 2003.

Alexe was one of Romania’s best loved sportsmen and over 1,500 people are expected to attend his funeral.
