After 3 weeks and over 100,00 votes, it is time to take a look at who is leading the polls for the FIBA Europe League All Star Day.
The event will take place on March 16th 2004 in Kiev, Ukraine and will pit the FEL’s top European players against a Rest of the World Team.
Fan voting will run until the end of February, after which the final votes will be tallied with those of the head coaches of each FIBA Europe League club. 10 players for each team will be selected via the poll and the last 2 roster spots will be awarded and chosen by a FIBA Europe League panel of experts.
The same panel will select the coaching staff for each team.
As it stands today, the team would look as follows:
Abdul-Rauf leads all vote-getters, closely followed by Lithuanian veteran and European Champion Virginijus Praskevicius. With the coaches’ votes still to be counted, there may be some changes to the top players.
Of all of the MVP’s of the week up until this point, so far Laurent Sciarra (Paris Basket Racing), Milutan Aleksic (Lemesos) and Gert Kullamäe (GHP Bamberg) have not received enough votes to make the team. Arguments could also be made for, among others, Novi Sad star Milan Gurovic, Hemofarm guard Nenad Bogavac (3rd in the league in scoring at 20ppg), Skonto center Andris Biedrins) and Aris forward Nestoras Kommatos.
However, with the coaches' vote not yet complete and 3 weeks left of the fan poll, there may well be some changes to the final rosters.
The full line-ups will be revealed following the end of the poll on 27th February 2004.
