EuroLeague Women Champions UMMC Ekaterinburg tripped Group A leaders Universitat FC Barcelona 85-62 in today`s top match.

Right from the start UMMC and Universitat FC were playing point by point, not allowing the opponent to have the slightest lead.

Ekaterinburg first broke the chain on a beautiful blockshot by Yolanda Griffith, followed by a successful counter-attack at the hands of Svetlana Abrosimova, who connected from behind the 3-point line.

Abrosimova then added on as she found a loophole under the Spanish basket. Barcelona failed to shorten the score difference. In the 7th minute of the game they trailed 19-13. After the first quarter the guests were even down 23-16.

But the Spanish team did not lose contact. They struggled from the line and only hit 50 percent of their foul shots, but their floor game suddenly improved.

Both teams were very active both in offense and defense and Barcelona almost managed to close the gap. One minute before the end of the first period the score was 34-31. But Tameca Dixon sank two foul shots to make it 36-31 at the half.

After the break both teams still went side by side as they repeatedly exchanged successful attacks. Both kept their intensive offense and the margin always lay between 3 and 5 points.

Then UMMC got up a little momentum. Yolanda Griffith was doing her best and increased her team`s advantage to 9 points (48-39).

The attacks of Barcelona were not successful. The game was extremely intensive, but the players from Spain couldn’t finish their attacks. UMMC took advantage: Irina Osipova scored before the end of the 3rd period and the quarter finished with the score of 61-47.

Everybody in the Arena expected Barcelona to start a run in the final period but despite their efforts nothing happened. UMMC had full control of the situation and pushed their lead to over 20 points five minutes from the end (68-47).

It took even an time-out before Tracy Reid scored the first points for the Spanish team in the 4th quarter. The attacks of the Spain players didn’t reach the basket and everybody could see that they were tired.

UMMC was not however and the Russian side looked for revenge for the defeat by 24 points in the first game in Barcelona. The Russians failed, although they won the game 85-62 in a very impressive way. But they came up short by just one point.

Still, UMMC now lead Group A ahead of Barcelona and Bourges Basket.

MVP of the game: Yolanda Griffith (UMMC) with 21 points and 12 rebounds
