In a match up of Spain’s 2 EuroLeague Women sides, Valencia defeated Barcelona 83:91 at the weekend behind 42 points from national team forward Marta Fernandez.
Fernandez has struggled with her shot so far in the EuroLeague Women, shooting just 27% on her 2-pt field goal attempts and missing all 6 of her 3-pointers. Nonetheless, it all seemed to come together on Saturday and she exploded for 42 points.
Fernandez’ contribution was all the more valuable due to the absence of Valencia stars Amaya Valdemoro and Sandy Brondello to injury. Valdemoro is expected to be out for at least 3 weeks.
With a roster of just 7 players, Valencia’s game plan was to defend Barcelona’s inside players Razija Brcaninovic and Silvia Mesa and attack from the outside on offense, a strategy which worked earlier this season when Valencia beat Barcelona to win the Supercopa.
It came up trumps again as a strong 3rd quarter, and an injury to Brcaninovic gave Valencia the win.
Valencia are still unbeaten in the Liga Femenina at 6-0 while Barcelona fall to second place in the table at 5-1.
