Latvia had an opportunity to beat Serbia & Montenegro on opening day in Group A but went cold in the fourth quarter and suffered a 72-61 defeat.
Leading 58-54 following a three-pointer by Ernests Kalve at the end of the third quarter, the Baltic nation was held to just three points over the final 10 minutes and no points over the last 5:56.
Nikola Dragovic poured in 20 points for the Serbo-Montenegrins, who took the lead for good with 4:40 to play at 62-61 on Nikola Dragovic's three-pointer.
They would end up finishing the game on a 14-0 run.
