Ekaterinburg Triumph

20 December 2007

UMMC Ekaterinburg maintained their strong position in Euroleague Women Group B with a 75-49 win over Wisla Can-Pack.

The result keeps Ekaterinburg at the top of the pool, two points ahead of second-placed Wisla after seven matches.

Agnieszka Palka chipped in with 11 points for Wisla but was unable to prevent her side suffering a heavy defeat as French Youngster Sandrine Gruda put in a star performance for Ekaterinburg to weigh in with 18 points.

The home side dominated the match from the tip-off and were 23-13 points up after the first quarter thanks largely to Australian Suzy Batkovic, who would go on to finish with 15 points in the match. Palka, Jelena Skerovic and Candice Dupree helped Wisla fight back in the second quarter and the deficit was narrowed to 35-26 at the half-time break.

But Batkovic and Gruda took the game away from the Polish side as the Russian outfit dominated to move ahead 56-35 heading into the final quarter.

Wisla battled bravely in the fourth quarter but Ekaterinburg won the final period 16-14 thanks to Agnieszka Bibrzycka to ease to victory.
