EuroLeague new-comers UB Barcelona face possibly their toughest opponent yet as they match up against 2003 Champions UMMC Ekaterinburg in the Palau Blaugrana 2 this evening.
Despite a depleted squad for this game through injury problems, Ekaterinburg is, nevertheless, a formidable opponent. The Catalan club however, remains optimistic.
"The Ekaterinburg team is composed of the best continental and world players.” commented UB coach Carme Lluveras. “They are the present European Champions and it will be hard to defeat them. We will play a relaxed game, but with high hopes!"
Barcelona remains so far undefeated this season, having won 3 games in the Spanish Liga Feminina and one in the Liga Catalana and also having got off to a great start in the EuroLeague last week winning by over 20 points away from home. Ekaterinburg, on the other hand, have not had such a smooth ride, as the injury problems have taken their toll.
Despite taking care of business in the EuroLeague opener against Euroleasing Orsi Sopron last week, the Russian Champions lost their last Russian Superleague game at the weekend to Vologda-Chevakata, a team that nomally UMMC would see off without much difficulty.
Ekaterinburg coach Zoran Visic acknowledges that the game this evening will not be easy, especially as he cannot rely on his full bench.
“UB Barça is a difficult team and I expect a tough battle. We have problems because only 7 players have been able to travel, a situation which does not reflect normal conditions.”
Both clubs have spent the last couple of days preparing in the Palau Blaugrana 2 and are now looking for the win and keeping their EuroLeague record intact.
