Nymburk Too Strong For Nahariya
// 18.01.2006

CEZ Nymburk sprung one of the surprises in round II of the EuroCup on Wednesday with a strong second-half performance at home to beat Fenerbahce 88-72.

Gintaras Einikis, Nymburk's 2.07m center, finished with a season-high 22 points on 10 of 13 shooting from the field, including two of three from behind the arc. He also pulled down five rebounds.

The performance will have reminded the Lithuanian and basketball fans of how good he has been over the years for his clubs and country.

He was right in the thick of things when the Czech team took control.

The Turkish team, who had won three consecutive games in Group I after finishing top of their first-round group with just a single defeat in six games, stormed out to a 26-16 first-quarter advantage.

They still led 53-47 with three minutes and 50 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Nymburk  hen went on a 15-4 run to take command.

Adam Hess' three-pointer with one minute and 26 seconds remaining seized a 57-55 lead for the hosts. By the end of the spurt, the home side led 62-57.

Fenerbahce's Kaspars Kambala, the Latvian international center and a player who has been in excellent form of late, scored with a tap-in at the buzzer to mark the end of the third quarter, but the visitors never recovered.

Einikis, the 36-year-old veteran, started off the final period with a three-pointer to keep the momentum going, and Nymburk rolled to victory, outscoring Fener 26-13 in the fourth.

Stanislav Votroubek and Goran Savanovic both contributed 13 points to the victors.

Nymburk's talisman for the past two seasons, Adam Hess, had 10 points and 14 rebounds and came up with three steals.

Jarod Stevenson's game-high 26 points were in vain for the Turkish club.

Kambala added 18 points for Fenerbahce.

Group I has lived up to expectations in terms of its competitiveness, with last  year's FIBA Europe League champions Dynamo St Petersburg bottom of the pile at 1-2.

Fener are still top at 3-1, with both BC Kyiv and Nymburk at 2-2.

Two rounds remain to be played.
