Nymburk Too Strong For Nahariya

Dynamo St Petersburg stayed alive in their quest to defend their EuroCup title Tuesday as they used a 15-0 run over the last five minutes to collect a 76-63 victory over CEZ Nymburk in Group I.

With the game tied 61-61 with five minutes left, the Russians put down the defensive clamps and held the Czechs scoreless until a lay-up with just 16 seconds left.

By then the game was out of reach as Jamal McCullough scored six of his game-high 16 points in the deciding 15-0 run.

Damir Miljkovic added 13 points for St Petersburg, while Vladimir Veremeenko chipped in 12 and Ognjen Askrabic 11.

The Russians are now 2-3 in the group - even with Nymburk. Both teams are just one game behind co-leaders Fenerbahce and BC Kyiv, who are both 3-2 after the Ukrainians knocked off the Turks 88-85 in overtime.

Kyiv’s road victory means that each team in the group will be battling for a place in the last eight in the final group games next Tuesday. Kyiv welcome Nymburk while Fener host Dynamo.

Adam Hess paced Nymburk on Tuesday with 15 points while Radoslav Rancik had 14.

Dynamo used an 11-0 run to open a 16-7 lead in the first quarter. But the Czechs answered with a 10-0 to close the first 10 minutes with a 17-16 lead.

Neither team could open more than a four-point lead in the second quarter, which ended 33-32 in favour of Nymburk.

St Petersburg scored the first six points of the second half, but the Czechs knew a victory on the road would improve their chances of advancing. The third period ended with Nymburk ahead 47-46.

Askrabic hit a lay-up with eight minutes left to open a five-point cushion - 56-51. But Hess hit two three-pointers to keep the Czechs in the game - at least until the last five minutes, when the Russians took over for good.
