Dubravka Dacic has left the Italy training ground in Taranto where the Azzurre are preparing for the Additional Qualifying Tournament for the EuroBasket Women.
One spot is still up for grabs for next month's EuroBasket in Poland.
"In the past I´ve had some problems adapting to the national team," the Slovenian-born center said.
"Now things have improved, but I still have to grow and make this change definite.
"I don't rule out returning to wear the Italy colors in the future but at this time, I prefer to take a step back and leave the training group."
Dacic, who is 1.98m tall, is only 26.
One Italian who wishes she could be with the team but cannot is Chiara Pastore, the guard of Beretta-Famila Schio.
The 24-year-old point guard fractured her nose in Schio's Italian play-off finals triumph over Cras Basket Taranto and just had surgery.
"The operation went well and I'm not well enough for the national team," Pastore said.
"To play with the blue shirt is always an honor, even more so for games that are so important.
"I couldn't wait any longer (for surgery), however: the intervention had to take place within eight days after the fracture."
Pastore says she'll be monitoring the team's results.
"I am sure that my friends in the national team will do everything to achieve the goal. I will cheer them on while watching on TV."
