Béres Leads Brno To Triumph Over CSKA

29 October 2008
Gambrinus Sika Brno dismissed any concerns among their adoring fans that the club could be starting to fade with a 70-65 triumph over CSKA on Wednesday in the Czech Republic.

Going up against the same club they beat to the 2006 EuroLeague Women crown in Brno, Gambrinus won for the second straight time in this year's competition after dropping their opener at home, October 15, to Umana Reyer.

The winners got 15 points from Hungarian Timea Ivkovicné Béres, while Zuzana Zirkova had 13 and Petra Kulichová 12.

Eva Viteckova also reached double figures in points with 10 for Gambrinus.

CSKA Moscow are thought once again to be one of the title challengers in the EuroLeague Women.

They entered the contest with two triumphs in Europe, but Gambrinus went in front by as many as 12 in the second quarter at 30-18 before going to the changing rooms on top 39-31.

Viteckova had eight points at half-time for the hosts and Douglas 11 for CSKA.

Ann Wauters poured in five straight points in the third quarter and Russia international Becky Hammon drilled a three as CSKA knotted the game at 39-39, but Kulichova stopped the run with a jumper for Gambrinus and then Béres buried back-to-back jump shots for a 45-39 lead.

CSKA tied the game again at 57-57 following another Hammon three-pointer just 4:37 from the end, but Viteckova hit a jump shot and Slovakia international Zuzana Zirkova made two baskets - the first a three - as Gambrinus went on top 64-57 with 2:23 to go.

They held on for a five-point win.

Hammon had 18 points and Katie Douglas 16 for CSKA.
