Wauters And Korstin Spark BC Volgaburmash
// 01.11.2006

Ann Wauters and Ilona Korstin led a balance scoring attack as BC Volgaburmash won 72-57 in their first game of the EuroLeague Women campaign against USK Prague.

Looking to bounce back from last season's defeat to Gambrinus Sika Brno in the final, Wauters and Co showed they would be a force to be reckoned with early on.

A 14-1 run in the first quarter allowed Samara to take control of the game.

Maria Stepanova (BC Volgaburmash)
Maria Stepanova had 10 points and six rebounds for BC Volgaburmash.
Trailing 8-4, Korstin made a jump-shot to ignite the run. She scored two more field goals during the stretch and Edwige Lawson's free throws with 3:41 to go put the Russian giants up 18-9.

From there, BC Volgaburmash maintained a double-digit advantage for most of the game.

The Volgamurmash team once again boasts a glittering array of international superstars and anyone of them can erupt for a big night in this competition.

Wauters was that player this evening.

The Belgian international scored 10 points in the second quarter to put her team up 40-29 at the half.

USK Prague scored to start the second half, making the score 40-31.

Wauters hit two free-throws moments later and her side would lead by double-digits until the final buzzer.

Wauters finished with 23 points on 10-of-12 shooting from the field, while Korstin tallied 18 points.

Despite the win, head coach Igor Grudin was not entirely pleased with his side's play.

“We couldn’t show a steady performance during the entire match," said Grudin.

"So far we can’t make our play stable. We will work on it thoroughly, because  in the nearest future we will face even more serious opponents”.

Grace Daley had a team-high 15 points in defeat.

Newcomer Sandra Le Drean, a Euroleague Women All-Star last year, was held to five points in her debut with USK Prague.
