Russia: Volgaburmash Win Big At UMMC

BC Volgaburmash overcame a determined USO Mondeville Basket side 83-49 to maintain control of EuroLeague Women Group A.

The Russian giants, who slipped up earlier in the campaign against MiZo Pecs, have been magnificent ever since and have not lost a game in their domestic league or in Europe.

USO are one of the leading teams in France and while they put up a fight, they caved in against the defending champions in the second half.

Ironically, it was French international guard Edwige Lawson who did much of the damage for Volgaburmash with 16 points, six assists and four rebounds.

Mondeville fell behind early in the game but stayed within touch for the entire first half.

Grace Daley's three pointer with a little more than two minutes remaining in the second quarter pulled the home side to within 36-32. The visitors then outscored Mondeville 7-2 to head to the changing rooms with a 43-34 advantage.

Volgaburmash did not immediately press home their advantage in the third quarter but by the end of the frame Igor Grudin's team were in front 58-45.

By the start of the last period, Volgaburmash were hitting their stride and when the game was over they had blown out their hosts by 34 points.

Mondeville only scored four points in the fourth quarter.

Volgaburmash outrebounded Mondeville 45-34, with Russian superstar Maria Stepanova pulling down 13 to go with her 10 points.

The winners shot a scintillating 64.7% (11 of 17) from three-point range while their rivals were a mere 3 of 23 (13%).
