Did anyone see this coming?
Tartu University Rock are unbeaten at 4-0 in the EuroCup Qualifying Round after steamrolling most of their opponents.
This club has already secured a place in the eighth-finals. If big man Brian Cusworth and the rest of the Tartu players remain healthy, this Estonian team could go a long way in the competition.
Brian, after a very busy weekend with his club, sat down and answered some questions for FIBA Europe.
FIBA Europe: Hi Brian. This run that Tartu Rock is on in the EuroCup is a terrific one. What has the reaction been like at the university and overall in Estonia?
Brian Cusworth: "From what I gather, this is one of the best runs that our program has made in any cup like this in recent history and obviously the emotions and confidence are running high. It's obviously my first experience with anything like this, so I'm enjoying every moment."
FIBA Europe: Why is Tartu Rock playing so well? Is your team just better organized than the other sides you are facing, or is it a confidence factor that comes with winning games? Did the general manager just make a lot of great signings, like bringing in you, for example?
Brian Cusworth: "It's tough to assign our recent success to any singular facet of our game. I think we have a group with solid elder statesmen as established leaders, and a number of very smart players who play well together. The confidence factor definitely helps once the wins start coming, and the fact that we have shot the ball exceptionally well at home carries its own weight."
FIBA Europe: There is an interesting game coming up with the Russian outfit Samara. What can you tell us about that showdown, and is it important to finish top of the group? Also, did you know that the coach of that team, Valeriy Tikhonenko, once played for Russia and also coached CSKA Moscow when Andrei Kirilenko was on that team?
Brian Cusworth: "We see it as priority number one to finish at the top of the group in order to secure the top seed in the next round. And I must apologize to FIBA Europe that my European Basketball history knowledge is not the best and didn't know such interesting facts."
FIBA Europe: Are your old college buddies at Harvard keeping in touch with you, asking you interesting questions?
Brian Cusworth: "My former roommate has been keeping up with my team's progress and has had some fun trying to navigate through some of the Estonian sites. One of my teammates got a good laugh out of it when he called on Skype and jokingly asked me to translate the title of this article while butchering the Estonian language. It's not an easy one to pick up. In all seriousness, though, I'm having a great time out here and am happy to let him and some of my other close friends back home live vicariously through my experiences."
FIBA Europe: Brian, thanks for spending some time to talk to FIBA Europe
