Second Quarter Spurt Pushes Mavpy Past Tartu


A dominating second quarter helped Cherkaski Mavpy to an 87-75 win over Tartu Rock in the team’s opener of the EuroCup Challenge.

Point guard Rolandas Jarutis came up with a big performance, tallying 22 points and six assists for the victors.

He scored eight of the 22 in the second quarter when his side outscored Tartu Rock 31-19 to open up a 52-39 lead.

A 13-2 Tartu Rock run in the fourth quarter allowed them to re-take the lead midway through the final stanza (71-70), but Mavpy responded with a 15-5 run to end the game and secure the win.

“Today we had the debut on the European arena," said Mavpy head coach Andrii Podkovyrov.

"Not all players, that played today, have the experience of participation in the European competitions. There were nervous situations, that’s why mistakes. The boys played well, especially it concern to the point guards. The play of  Jarutis was excellent.”

“We have good coach. If we fullfill all the instructions of the coach, we will win. I’m satisfied with the game and more so with the victory,” added Jarutis.

“We spent a lot of energy to recover from down 16,” said Martin Muursepp, who had a team-high 19 points for Tartu Rock.

“I am happy, that I today’s game the boys could show their character. It’s a pity, the second quarter was the failure for us,” concluded Tartu Rock head coach Algirdas Brazys.
