Fernandez Overjoyed To Reach Final Four

Marta Fernandez is still on cloud nine after helping Wisla Can-Pack Krakow book a place in the EuroLeague Women Final Four.

The Polish club won Game 3 on Wednesday night against Frisco Sika Brno, 78-73, and will now take on Ros Casares.

"I have no words to express how one feels," Fernandez said.

"I am thrilled and excited. I am going to be able to play in my first Final Four.

"Who would have told us back in September that we would be in this position now? To be among the best four teams in Europe is a dream come true."

Fernandez averaged 14.1 points, 3.9 assists, 3.3 rebounds and a team-high 2.1 steals per game for Wisla this season in Europe.

The sister of Spain national team star Rudy Fernandez of the Portland Trail Blazers, Marta Fernandez thought she was going to compete in the EuroCup Women but Wisla gained a late entry to the EuroLeague Women when CSKA Moscow pulled out with financial problems.

Under new coach Jose Hernandez, the man who guided Halcon Avenida to the EuroLeague Women Final last season, and with a raucous crowd at all of their home games, Wisla went on a dream run.

"One of the keys to have reached the Final Four has been our fans," admitted Fernandez, who has also been voted to the EuroLeague Women All-Star Game.

"They have made us feel their presence in every game.

"They have not stopped chanting and the celebrations after the game (on Wednesday), I will never forget them."

What would make the occasion all the sweeter for Fernandez would be to be to play in Spain, her homeland.

"We are all hoping the Final Four will be in Valencia," Fernandez said.

"To play it in my home nation, surrounded by my people, would be very special.

"Moreover, I have great memories of my five years there."

UMMC Ekaterinburg have also made an official application to host the Final Four.

FIBA Europe will reveal the host city of the Final Four at a press conference in Gdynia on Monday before Tuesday's EuroLeague Women All-Star Game.
