Wisla Triumph At Prague

10 January 2008

Wisla Can-Pack Krakow won a vital road game at ZVVZ Prague on Thursday in the EuroLeague Women.

Spain international Marta Fernandez erupted for 24 points to lead the team from Poland to a fourth victory in eight Group B games.

The result means both Wisla and Bourges are 4-4 heading into the final two weeks of group play, with one of these two sides likely to finish in second by undefeated UMMC Ekaterinburg (8-0).

The defeat is a hammer blow to Prague, with coach Lubor Blazek admitting before the game that victory was a must for his team to have a realistic chance of staying alive in the competition.

Prague twice led by as many as five points in the first half, with Janel Burse causing problems for the Polish team's defense.

Her jump shot midway through the second quarter took her points haul to nine and gave the home side a 35-30 lead.

They would also move in front at 44-39, but Wisla scored the last five points of the period to leave the game at 44-44 at half-time.

Fernandez and the Krakow team were in the ascendancy in the third quarter.

A three-pointer and lay-up by the Spaniard on consecutive possessions gave her 15 points for the contest and pushed the visitors ahead at 56-47 with 5:39 to go in the third quarter.

But Prague did not let them pull away and a Burse lay-up cut the deficit to 58-55.

Burse was aggressive under the basket and drew a foul with 5:50 remaining and sank both shots from the stripe to reduce the arrears to three one last time at 75-72.

Fernandez, the sister of DKV Joventut star Rudy Fernandez, replied with a jumper and two more free throws to give Wisla that one final push which helped them prevail.

Burse finished with 19 points while Lindsay Whalen led Prague with 22.
