EUROCHALLENGE

Several EuroChallenge Quarter-Final spots remain up for grabs after the penultimate week of action in the Last 16.

Mad-Croc Fuenlabrada and Besiktas Milangaz had already sealed the two spots from Group K but after each won on Tuesday, so next week's clash between the two will determine first place in the pool.

With Fuenlabrada winning by only two points at home in their first meeting, excitement is guaranteed.

Artland, with Quarter-Final participation assured before their trip to Triumph Lyubertsy, crashed to an 87-70 defeat in Russia.

Despite the outcome, Artland clinched first place in Group L by virtue of Antwerp giants' 89-67 demolition of Pinar Karsiyaka.

The other Quarter-Final slots are still to be filled.

In Group I, the only team without a chance of moving on to the last eight is ZZ Leiden.

The Dutch team provided the competition with many thrills, including one on Wednesday when they hosted BK Ventspils and suffered a 60-57 defeat.

EWE Baskets' 82-80 victory over visiting Roanne on Tuesday left both clubs, and Ventspils, at 3-2 going into the last week.

Roanne, edged in their first encounter with Ventspils by a point in France on January 24, must now travel to Latvia and attempt to beat Gundars Vetra's side in the Baltics.

The winner of that game is in the last eight.

EWE Baskets will be assured of a spot in the next round if they win at ZZ Leiden.

Should EWE Baskets lose, Roanne and Ventspils are through to the Quarter-Finals with both of them holding a potential tie-breaker over the Germans.

In Group J, Okapi Aalstar's 86-84 home win over Sznolki Olaj last week left both sides with 2-3 records and still with a chance of progressing.

Telekom Baskets Bonn could have progressed this week with a victory at Elan Chalon but fresh off their Semaine des As triumph in France, Chalon rolled to an 88-86 victory.

In Group L, there is a three-way battle for second place between Antwerp Giants, Pinar Karsiyaka and Triumph Lyubertsy.

Triumph, winners of two straight, host Antwerp next week while Artland are at home to Pinar Karsiyaka.

If Artland win, the winner of Triumph vs Antwerp goes through.

If Karsiyaka beat the Dragons they need Triumph Lybertsy to beat Antwerp in order to progress.

Clutch EWE Baskets

Kenneth Hasbrouck didn't have the best game of his career for EWE Baskets on Tuesday night against Roanne, but he sure hurt the French team with his long-range shooting.

The guard made four of six from behind the arc with one of his bombs proving decisive.

With his team trailing 80-78 and needing someone to take responsibility, Hasbrouck caught a pass from Ronald Burrell and buried a three-pointer with just 15 seconds to go.

Adam Chubb then made his presence felt on defense by blocking a Mouloukou Diabate's lay-up attempt just five seconds from the end.

A Burrell free-throw gave the hosts an 82-80 triumph to leave both sides with 3-2 records.

Elan Chalon On A Roll

7. Sergey Karasev (Triumph Lyubertsy)
Sergey Karasev has been hot throughout the season for Triumph Lyubertsy

Observers in France may be thinking that Elan Chalon are the team to beat in the EuroChallenge after watching them win the Semaine des As and then dismantle Telekom Baskets by 22 points.

Malcolm Delaney hit four of his six shots from three-point land and the team dominated on the boards, out-rebounding Bonn 36-25.

"The players remain focused on our goals," Chalon coach Gregor Beugnot said.

Karasev Again

Triumph Lyubertsy looked dead in the water after their first three games in the Last 16 but the team now has a chance of progressing due in large part to Sergey Karasev.

The youngster had 24 points in the victory over Artland.

"We won a very important game," Karasev said.

"We played with great desire, because we had to keep our chances to qualify for the play-offs."
