MVP of the Week – Khalid El-Amin (Besiktas)

Turkish club Besiktas moved into second place in their FIBA Europe League group this week. The Istanbul based side put on a clinical performance against Azovmash, comprehensively defeating the Ukrainian champions 105-83.

Besiktas point guard Khalid El-Amin gets the lion’s share of the credit for the win. The US point guard was on top of his game against Azovmash. He nailed 19 points on 5/9 shooting from the field and 8/9 from the free throw line. He also dished a season high 15 assists to his team-mates, 5 of whom reached double figures in scoring.

El-Amin currently leads the FIBA Europe League in assists at 7.7 apg.

Born in Minneapolis, El-Amin led his high school team to a state championship before attending the University of Connecticut (UCONN) in 1997. He was the starting point guard on the UCONN team which won an NCAA title in 1999, defeating Duke in the final.

El-Amin left UCONN in 2000 and was drafted by the Chicago Bulls. He spent 1 season in the NBA followed by a season in the CBA. He first came to Europe in 2002 and played half a season with French side Strasbourg. Another short stint in the NBA followed (with the Miami Heat), before El-Amin returned to Europe, this time to Israel with Ironi Ramat Gan.

El-Amin joined Besiktas in 2003 and is in his second season with the club.
