Pecherov Helps Kyiv Take Down Azovmash

BC Kyiv powered their way to an 83-68 triumph over Azovmash on Saturday to clinch the regular season Superliga crown.

Ukraine's representatives in next weekend's EuroCup Final Four, Azovmash were no match for Kyiv who now have homecourt advantage through the domestic play-offs.

Kyiv will now be full of confidence heading into the post-season because every Ukrainian side that has won the regular season has gone on to lift the title.

Azovmash shot just 34% from the floor and 60% at the charity stripe.

"We were beaten in every department tonight," said a worried Azovmash coach Rimas Girskis, whose men will now focus on Friday's EuroCup semi-final against Virtus Bologna in Girona, where the Final Four is being staged.

"One of the reasons for our defeat is that the players are tired after a tough March.

"I tried to change the game using our bench, but this didn't work."

Kyiv led by 10 points at half-time and cruised over the final two quarters. Oleksiy Pecherov was the star for Kyiv, notching 15 points and grabbing 14 rebounds.

Damir Rancic was good behind the arc, pouring in four of six on his way to 14 points overall. Young Azovmash sensation Serhiy Lishchuk, a Ukraine international, scored 21 points and pulled down 17 rebounds.

Khalid El-Amin also scored 15 points in a losing effort.

"This game showed that we are on the right path," said Kyiv coach Tomo Mahoric.
