Vainauskas Fired For Kursk Failures

Dynamo Kursk have made a coaching change on the eve of the new EuroCup Women season after deciding to dispense of Alfredas Vainauskas.

The club made significant investment in the team during the summer by adding an array of stellar names including Candice Dupree, Rebekkah Brunson, Oleksandra Kurasova, Jelena Milovanovic and Shay Doron.

However despite this, they have endured a miserable start to the Russian Premier League season.

Their latest setback came with a humiliating 20-point home-court demolition at the hands of visiting Nadezhda Orenburg and it proved to be the last straw.

With ambitions of challenging for domestic honours and as one of the favourites to win EuroCup Women, club bosses have acted swiftly by firing Vainauskas and replacing him with Bo Overton.

The colourful American coach has coached in the WNBA and most recently in China.

The fate of Vainauskas completes a miserable few months for the Lithuanian play-caller.

He also presided over the disastrous EuroBasket Women title defence of the Russian national team, who crashed out during the first round in France and therefore also missed out on their usual spot at the FIBA World Championship for Women.

Overton and Dynamo Kursk tip-off their EuroCup Women campaign at home to Tsmoki Minsk on Thursday.
