Dynamo Kursk beat Kayseri Kaski spor in last year's EuroCup Women title showdown and both sides launched new campaigns in the competition on Thursday night.

Kursk defeated visiting Adana Botas and Kayseri fell in Belarus to Horizont.

Kursk are an ambitious team that could find its way into next year's EuroLeague Women.

For now, they want to repeat as champions in the EuroCup and Alfredas Vainauskas' squad could not have had a better start.

Temeka Johnson had a terrific all-round effort with 15 points, nine assists and seven rebounds as Kursk prevailed, 79-64.

The hosts appeared to have a firm grip on proceedings with a 30-18 advantage early in the second quarter after an Ekaterina Lisina jump shot.

Adana Botas battled back and closed the gap to 34-31 when Quianna Chaney hit a three-pointer.

Adana threatened to overhaul the deficit but never pulled level.

In the fourth quarter, the Russians pulled away with a Johnson three-ball stretching the advantage to 63-45.

Dynamo had some nervous moments in the game but ultimately clinched a convincing victory.

Kayseri, meanwhile, slumped to a 78-73 setback to Horizont in Minsk.

Ukraine international Aleksandra Khomenchuk had 13 points and an eye-popping 17 rebounds for Horizont.

It was Belarus international Tatsiana Likhtarovich who put the hosts in front to stay.

Just three minutes into the second quarter with the game knotted at 44-44, the 1.80m point guard buried a jumper to trigger a 10-2 run.

Dynamo Kursk weren't the only Russian team to win on Thursday.

Fatimatou Sacko's 30 points and 10 rebounds led BLMA.

Another French outfit, Hainaut Basket, got a double-double in points and rebounds from Stefanie Murphy as they claimed an 82-51 win at Ted Ankara in Turkey.

Murphy finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

The last game of the evening was won in thrilling fashion by Lotto Young Cats of Belgium.

Playing at Olimpia Grodno in Belarus, Lotto Young Cats won 75-74 after 22-year-old power forward Lien Lentacker drilled a three-pointer with just 45 seconds to go.

The game was tight from start to finish.

The Grodno power forward Maryia Rashchenia had a chance to win at the death for the home side but her lay-up stayed out.
