Telekom Baskets Bonn played tough defence in holding Antwerp Giants to just 36 percent shooting in an 81-72 road victory in Group H of the EuroChallenge.
Benas Veikalas paced Bonn with 18 points while Jared Jordan scored 14 points and Kyle Weems had 13. Bryan Hopkins led the way for the Belgian hosts with 18 points while Ralph Briggs collected 17 points, seven rebounds and five assists; and Gregory Thondique had nine points and 11 rebounds in the losing effort.
There were five lead changes in the first quarter until Patrick Ewing Jr. scored all seven of his points in an 11-2 Bonn run to take a 26-17 lead after one quarter.
The guests struggled offensively in the second quarter with just 10 points but still led 36-32 at the break.
Hopkins trimmed the margin to 36-35 with a triple to start the second half but Veikalas and Jordan both hit two three-pointers and Andrej Mangold also hit from long range for Bonn, who pushed the lead to 10 points, 58-48. The gap was 60-51 after three quarters.
Bonn's 7-0 run to start the fourth was answered with a 7-0 spurt for Antwerp. And the Giants were within five late at 73-68, but Chris Ensminger, Jordan and Veikalas combined to go eight-for-eight from the free-throw line in the final 1:18 to secure the win.
