EuroChallenge side Gaz Metan Medias were in action on Wednesday, for the first time in 2013, and started off the new year on the right foot.

Medias played host to CSS Giurgiu in the Romanian LNB league and clinched a straightforward 73-60 victory to strengthen their options for a play-off spot.

The hosts had suffered four consecutive league defeats in December but on Wednesday they looked like a team determined to put an end to the slide.

They took an eight-point lead, 21-13, in the first quarter and further widened the gap to 38-28 at half-time.

The second half was a back-and-forth affair but although Giurgiu were improved, Medias stayed always in control and maintained the lead until the final buzzer.

Medias captain Titus Nicoara was inspirational for his team. He went 7-of-9 from the floor to lead all scorers with 18 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to collect a double-double.

27-year-old guard Kyle Shiloh, who joined Medias during the Christmas break, left a positive impression on his debut.

Shiloh hit three of his six shots from behind the three-point arc to finish with 15 points and added five rebounds and three assists in the 30 minutes he spent on the floor in his first appearance.

Medias improved to 9-7 and have climbed back to eighth place thanks to this win.

The are playing away to second-from-bottom BC Farul Constanta on Saturday night, before they get on the plane to Turkey.

On Tuesday, the Romanian side are facing Pinar Karsiyaka in their EuroChallenge Group I opener.

A Trip To Forget For Bonn

Telekom Baskets Bonn paid the price for a calamitous first half on Wednesday night in the German BEKO Bundesliga.

Michael Koch's team travelled to Bayreuth to take on the local team and, for the first 20 minutes, it almost looked like they arrived at the arena after the game had tipped off.

BBC Bayreuth won the first quarter 23-12 and gave up even less points in the second period, to lead 44-23 at the interval.

Bonn came back from the locker room thinking they can still turn the game around but, although they attempted a comeback and reduced the deficit to 13 points in the beginning of the final quarter, they never managed to get any closer.

They ended up losing 77-61 and slipped to 14th place in the standings with a 7-10 record, leaving Bayreth among the four teams that at the moment are closer to the top eight and a spot in the play-offs.

It is unlikely that coach Koch will draw many positives from his side's Wednesday night performance, as Bonn shot 39 percent from the floor, 60 percent from the charity stripe and was out-rebounded 36-29.

However, it is definitely encouraging that new signing Jamel McLean went 4-for-8 from the field on his debut and led the team in scoring with 16 points.

The 24-year-old American brought down five boards, also a team-high, tied with his compatriot Kyle Weems, and did not commit any turnovers in his 23 minutes on the court.

No other Bonn player scored in double digits and only one, Benas Veikalas, shot above 50 percent.

When the EuroChallenge Last 16 gets under way on Tuesday, the Germans are travelling to Belgium to face Okapi Aalstar in Group L action.
