Weekend Action Roundup

Turk Telekom Shock Efes

Turk Telekom have been struggling on all fronts this season but they'll be in a good mood for this week's home clash with Norrköping Dolphins in the EuroChallenge.

That's because the strugglers upset Efes Pilsen, 95-93.

The 33-year-old veteran K'zell Wesson tore apart Turkish giants Efes, scoring 28 points and grabbing 16 rebounds.

Turk Telekom improved to 3-5 with the victory.

They are 0-3 in Europe.

Also in Turkey, Pinar Karsiyaka hammered Bornova 116-95 with Furkan Aldemir pouring in 16 points and hauling in 10 rebounds.

Karsiyaka, 3-0 in Europe, are 4-4 in Turkey's Beko BBL.

Zagreb Stop The Rot

KK Zagreb, like Turk Telekom, are 0-3 in the EuroChallenge but they got a huge win over the weekend that may spark their European campaign into life.

The Croatia club won 82-75 at Union Olimpija after outscoring the hosts 30-16 over the last 10 minutes.

Luka Zoric, the young Croatia international, had 28 points and nine rebounds for Zagreb.

They take on Telekom Baskets Bonn this week.

Zadar and Krka are in the EuroChallenge and both fell in the Adriatic League.

Cibona edged Zadar, 84-71, and Krka lost at Buducnost, 68-63.

Spartak, BC NN Renew Acquaintances

Don't be surprised if Spartak St Petersburg and Lokomotiv Kuban are in the reckoning for honors in the EuroChallenge by season's end.

Both sides have quality players, and coaches.

The two sides each tasted victory over the weekend in Russia's top flight.

Zvi Sherf, who has led Spartak St Petersburg to three straight wins in the EuroChallenge, followed up last week's victory over BC NN with an 80-73 triumph over them in Russia's PBL.

The winners got 26 points and seven rebounds from their FYR of Macedonia international Pero Antic, but the team's lackluster showing in the fourth quarter set alarm bells ringing.

The visitors, who are 0-3 in the EuroChallenge after three narrow defeats, outscored the home side 22-17 to make sure the result was in doubt until the end.

"I am very happy that we won," said Sherf, the former Israel and Maccabi Tel Aviv coach.

"But on the other hand, I am disappointed about our game during last five minutes.

"I am not running away from any problem.

"I know what we've done well and what we haven't done well.

"There is no reason for what happened during the last five minutes."

Nevertheless, the important thing was getting the victory that has left Spartak third in Russia at 4-2 and just a half-game behind leaders BC Khimki and level with CSKA Moscow (4-2).

"We won and it's very important," Sherf said.

"We want to be among the leaders of the league. We have very tough schedule now. It makes us more tired and also doesn't give us time to train as we need.

"Also we played today without our leading center Popovic.

"Pero Antic was good today but we need also Popovic who played very well in Gravelines.

10. Anton Ponkrashov (Spartak)
Anton Ponkrashov's Spartak have beaten BC NN twice in the space of 5 days

"We hope he returns to us soon."

Spartak are at Szolnoki Olaj this week in EuroChallenge Group A.

Szolnoki Olaj have won two straight in Europe since their season-opening 88-70 defeat in St Petersburg.

Lokomotiv are 2-1 in EuroChallenge Group F and will have the opportunity this week to their season-opening, double-overtime setback at Antwerp Giants.

Kestutis Kemzura's men also improved to 4-2 with a 78-64 victory at Triumph Moscow Region.

Russia's other team in the EuroChallenge, Enterprise BC Dynamo, fell 80-66 at UNICS Kazan.

Vasily Zavoruev and Nikita Shabalkin each had 13 points in defeat.

Dynamo are bottom of the Russian PBL with just one win and five defeats.

Liege Get Domestic Win

Belgacom Liege Basket are undefeated at 3-0 in the EuroChallenge but have struggled on the domestic front.

They got a 77-71 win over Telenet BC Oostende - another EuroChallenge team.

Dexia Mons-Hainaut had a bye over the week.

Nancy Stay Hot

In France, SLUC Nancy Basket have been thriving.

The club has been winning close games in the EuroChallenge (3-0) and in the LNB, with a 81-75 home triumph over Chalon/Saône their latest success.

Tremmell Darden has been arguably their most important player and he poured in 25 points in their latest domestic victory.

Gravelines and Entente Orleanaise are also in the EuroChallenge.

Gravelines are top of the standings in France - one point clear of Nancy - after a 73-67 triumph over Asvel with Juby Johnson scoring 19 points.

Entente Orleanaise fell 79-72 at home to Roanne, despite getting 18 points from Maleye Ndoye.

Landry Leads Prostejov

BK Prostejov are off to a 3-0 start in the EuroChallenge, and they're also flying in the Czech Republic with a 10-2 record.

The latest side to fall to Prostejov at home was Basketball Brno, 86-66.

Kyle Landry led a balanced Prostejov attack with 19 points.

Wins for Skyliners, Bonn

In Germany, Deutsche Bank Skyliners bounced back from their defeat at the buzzer against BC Khimik with an 83-52 victory over Mitteldeutscher BC.

In a weird game, Gordon Herbert's side opened up a 24-10 lead by the end of the first quarter only for the visitors to claw their way back and knot the contest at 34-34 early in the third quarter.

Skyliners then blew away Mitteldeutscher, outscoring them 27-12 in the frame before cruising to a 31-point victory.

"We just came out and played the game as a team, the way we had started," Skyliners' Quantez Robertson said.

"Coach gave us a good speech in the locker room and we came out (in the second half), played real aggressive, executed our plays.

"We were able to knock down some easy shots, get some steals and defensive stops and that kind of got us going in the third quarter."

Germany's other EuroChallenge outfit, Telekom Baskets Bonn, won 87-79 at ratiopharm Ulm.
