EUROCHALLENGE

14. Petri Virtanen (Joensuun Kataja)
Petri Virtanen took centre-stage against CSU Asesoft Ploiesti, scoring a game-high 23 points

Petri Virtanen's 23 points paced five players in double figures as Joensuun Kataja opened Group B play of the EuroChallenge with a convincing 91-67 victory at home over CSU Asesoft Ploiesti.

Jerald Fields scored 16 points for the Finnish hosts while Jermaine Flowers added 13 points and Johnell Smith and Antti Kanervo each tallied 12 points for the winners.

Darius Hargrove scored 21 points and Vladimir Tica had a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds in a losing effort for the Romanians.

Asesoft jumped out to a 5-3 lead early but it was short lived. Virtanen converted a four-point play and Juho Nenonen made two three-pointers in an 18-2 run as Joensuun began to take control of the game, leading 23-9 after one quarter.

The onslaught had already started and the second quarter featured a big three-point play by Flowers and a third triple by Virtanen as the lead increased to 23 points. Joensuun were ahead 47-26 at halftime.

The Finns were just too dominant though Hargrove did all he could to keep Ploiesti in the game. But the cushion ballooned to 32 points, 70-38, after three quarters.

The advantage grew to 33 points - 71-38 - before Asesoft finally picked up their game and were able to cut into the deficit, bringing it down to 21 points at 87-66.
