Stepanova Leads All-Tournament Team

It was no consolation for Russia's heartbreaking final second loss to Czech Republic in the gold medal game, but Maria Stepanova was selected as the 2005 EuroBasket Women MVP following Sunday's final in Ankara.

The 202 cm Stepanova was a force during Russia's attempt to go for a second consecutive gold medal, and fully deserved the title as the tournament's top player.

Russia looked for Stepanova to lead them at both ends of the floor and that's exactly what she did, leading her team in points (18 ppg), rebounds (9.6 rpg) and blocked shots (2 bpg).

Stepanova was joined on the All-Tournament team by team-mate Tatiana Shchegoleva.

Playing in just her third major tournament with the senior squad, the 23 year old center proved to be an effective partner for Stepanova in the front court.

She averaged 10.5 ppg and 6.8 rpg and led her side to semi-final victory against Lithuania with 22 points and 9 rebounds.

Amaya Valdemoro (ESP), Hana Machova (CZE) and Eva Viteckova (CZE) rounded out the All-Tournament Team.

Valdemoro was her spectacular self for Spain as she led her side throughout the competition and filled the stat sheet in every game she played.

In fact, Valdemoro led Spain in no less than five statistical categories, points (21.6 - she led all players in the tournament), rebounds (7.9 rpg), steals (3.1 spg) and blocks (1 bpg).

Machova, who at just 26 years old is playing in her 4th EuroBasket Women, is the heart and soul of the Czech Republic's fast-paced offense. She is elected to the All-Tournament team for the second consecutive EuroBasket Women.

Team-mate Eva Viteckova proved her reputation as one of Europe's most dangerous shooters with a great display to earn selection to the All-Tournament Team.

The 190 cm forward does most of her damage away from the basket and she shot an impressive 50% from three-point range for the tournament, as she led her side in scoring with 14.9 ppg.
